Northern Bobwhite Quail Citizen Science Project:

You can help us record observations and data for the bobwhite quail found in the park, all you need is your smartphone! What you help us find will be used to assess the health and trends of the bobwhite population.  With your help we can bring bobwhites back to the battlefield for future generations to enjoy.

About

Manassas National Battlefield Park has 5,000 acres of forests, grasslands, streams and ponds teeming with wildlife. Over 1,000 of those acres are native warm season grasses that have been established in the park to create habitat for declining grassland birds, like the Northern bobwhite.

Project

Did you know that the Northern bobwhites' population in the U.S. has declined significantly over the last 40 years and continues to decline by 4% annually?

How would you like to make a lasting impact on the quail here at the battlefield and be a part of making a difference in your own community?

In 2013, we began the first stages of managing our bobwhite population and other grassland bird species; through early morning surveys, vegetation mapping and habitat assessments.  We found bobwhites in three different locations throughout the park.
